A near miss with Lake Wanaka flooding

Last week we had a quite a few days of really heavy rain, not only in the town but in the headwaters of the main rivers that feed Lake Wanaka. Especially the Matukituki and Makarora. Unlike a few times in the last few decades high lake levels have seriously flooded many of the shops in the low lying areas of Wanaka, but this time just when it was looking likely again the rain eased. No doubt all helped by spring snow melt not being a factor this time of year.

So now the lake is more picturesque than ever as it's well
up on the shore amongst the vegetation

Many people will be supplementing their winter wood
supply with driftwood

Usually the beautiful golden tress prevalent at this time
of year near the lake edge are surrounded by bare beaches and
rocks, but after all the flooding we have the rare scenario of the
tranquil waters lapping the trees and providing wonderful reflections
